EHF Lends More Than a Helping Hand to the Torrington United Basic School
Environmental Health Foundation (EHF), the not-for-profit local organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of people’s lives through educational and health based projects and programmes, as well as science & technology initiatives, has once again proven why it is one of Jamaica’s leading social-outreach organizations.
EHF has provided full funding for the refurbishing of the Torrington United Basic School, located at 35A Slipe Road, Kingston 5. The Project, which ran from January to July 2012, has greatly contributed to the provision of a safe and secure environment for children of the school.
The objective of EHF’s Basic School Project Committee is to “select schools in depressed neighborhoods and create a learning environment that will inspire, challenge and prepare children to be achievers”. This objective aligns with one of EHF’s overarching Strategic goals, which is “to improve the health and educational status of children aged 2 – 6 years and the quality of the environment in which they learn.”
After conducting a site visit of the school in December 2011, it was noted that the facilities was in dire need of support, particularly as it related to security and safety. To that end, EHF mobilized its resources and provided funding for the following works to be carried out:
- To make and install six (6) aluminium wire glass projecting windows
- To fabricate and install a metal framed door
- To remove existing grills, repair damage concrete wall and repaint the area
In light of their relatively poor security and safety measures, the school administration was grateful for the upgrade work which was carried out at the school.
EHF was pleased to carry out this and other social outreach projects and programmes, in fulfillment of its mandate of “enhancing the quality of people’s lives”.
